Lesson 2-09 – Practical Project – Simple Floor Plan

🎓 Lesson Plan: Practical Project — Simple Floor Plan

Level: Beginner
Lesson Title: Applying Basic Drafting to a Real-World Drawing
Duration: 2–3 hours (can be split over multiple sessions)
Delivery Mode: Instructor-led or self-paced with checkpoints
Project Type: Hands-on Application of Level 1 Skills

🎯 Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will:

  • Apply basic AutoCAD drawing, editing, and annotation skills to create a simple architectural floor plan.
  • Use layers, object snaps, line types, and annotation tools to draft clearly and accurately.
  • Set drawing limits and units for architectural work.
  • Output the project using layouts and plotting techniques.

🔧 Lesson Content

🔹 1. Project Introduction

  • Create a 1-bedroom floor plan: approx. 20′ x 30′
  • Include:
    • Living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom
    • Doors and windows
    • Basic furniture layout
  • Add dimensions and labels
  • Create layout and plot to scale

🔹 2. Setting Units and Drawing Limits

  • Units: Architectural (feet and inches)
  • Limits: 0,0 to 100,100
  • Grid and Snap: optional but helpful

🔹 3. Layers & Line Types

  • Create layers:
    • WALLS (continuous, thick)
    • DOORS/WINDOWS (dashed or continuous, medium)
    • FURNITURE (continuous, thin)
    • TEXT (text styles, annotative)
    • DIMENSIONS (standard dimstyle)
  • Assign appropriate colors and line weights

🔹 4–5. Drawing Walls

  • Exterior: 6″ thickness, draw as double lines or offset
  • Interior: use OFFSET and TRIM to divide rooms

🔹 6. Doors and Windows

  • Manually draw or insert door/window blocks
  • Position using midpoint and perpendicular snaps

🔹 7. Furniture and Fixtures

  • Insert or draw simple shapes (e.g., rectangles for beds/tables)
  • Ensure furniture is on a separate layer

🔹 8. Dimensions and Text

  • Use DIMLINEAR, DIMCONTINUE, DIMSTYLE
  • Add room labels (e.g., Bedroom, Kitchen) using MText

🔹 9. Layouts and Viewports

  • Create a new layout tab
  • Insert viewport at scale 1/4″ = 1′-0″
  • Adjust viewport layer visibility as needed

🔹 10. Plotting

  • Add title block (optional)
  • Choose appropriate plot style
  • Export to PDF

🧠 Practice Output Checklist

  • Walls and room structure accurate
  • Doors/windows inserted and placed with Osnaps
  • Layers are correctly used and named
  • Dimensions applied with consistent styles
  • Drawing includes labels for all rooms
  • Layout is scaled and properly plotted

✅ Completion Summary

✔ Applied all major beginner-level drafting tools
✔ Used real-world practices for architectural layout
✔ Demonstrated ability to output professional documentation
✔ Saved, printed, and reviewed finished product
